Hybrid application development: one application for the browser, the phone and the desk

Customers, field staff and back-office teams need the same information in different places. We build hybrid applications that share one code base and one back end across web and mobile, so a new feature reaches everyone at once and the data is the same wherever people look.

What hybrid means

The reach of the web with the feel of an app

A hybrid application combines the advantages of web and native development. Most of the code is written once, with web technologies, and runs in the browser, on the desktop and inside an iOS or Android app that can still use the camera, notifications and offline storage. Instead of three teams building three versions of the same features, one team builds them once.

Behind it sits the design we recommend for most business software: one back end that holds the data and the business rules, with web and mobile front ends on top, so every user works from the same records.

When it fits

When a hybrid app is the right choice

Hybrid development suits most business applications: portals, field-service and inspection apps, approval and booking tools, and companion apps for an existing web system. It is the right choice when you need both web and mobile, when the features are mostly forms, lists, documents and dashboards, and when you want to release often without maintaining separate code bases. A fully native app is better for heavy graphics, intensive device features or the last bit of performance, and we will say so when that is your case.

What we do

  • Customer portals and staff workspaces
  • Field-service and inspection apps
  • Mobile companion apps
  • Low-code where it is enough, custom code where it is not

What we do

Design, development, testing and maintenance

We cover the whole life of a hybrid application. Design: we work one-on-one with you and your users to understand the business need and the habits of the people who will use it, and recommend the features that will make it succeed. Development: we build the shared front end, the iOS and Android apps around it and the back end behind them. Testing: every build is tested in the browser and on real devices. Maintenance: after launch, we keep the frameworks, the store listings and the operating system support current.

Technology

Frameworks that will still be supported tomorrow

We build hybrid applications with React Native and Ionic, with React or Angular for the web, and with Firebase or a cloud back end on Azure or AWS behind them. We choose frameworks with a large community and a long future. Frameworks that have reached the end of their support, such as PhoneGap and Xamarin, are a common reason older hybrid apps need rebuilding, and we plan those moves one part at a time.

  • React and Angular for the web
  • Firebase, Azure and AWS back ends
  • Moves off unsupported frameworks such as PhoneGap and Xamarin

One back end

One set of data and rules for every user

The part of a hybrid application that matters most is the one users never see. A single back end holds the records, the business rules and the permissions, and offers them through secure APIs to every front end. A change to a rule is made once, and a customer who books on the phone and then calls the office reaches staff who see the same booking. For our repair division, one web application serves customers, technicians, accountants and administrators, each in a workspace for their role.

What we do

  • Secure APIs shared by web and mobile
  • Role-based access for every type of user
  • Sync for offline work
  • Integration with your ERP, CRM and Microsoft 365

Questions

Common questions

What is a hybrid app?

An application built mostly once, with web technologies, that runs in the browser and as an app on iOS and Android. It can still use device features such as the camera, notifications and offline storage.

Is a hybrid app slower than a native app?

For forms, lists, documents and dashboards, which is most of what business apps do, a well-built hybrid app feels as responsive as a native one, and React Native draws native interface elements. Where an app depends on heavy graphics or intensive processing on the device, we recommend native development instead.

Can we start with a web application and add a mobile app later?

Yes, and it is often the best order. If the back end and its APIs are designed for it from the start, a mobile app can be added later without rebuilding what already works.

What should we do with an old app built on PhoneGap or Xamarin?

Both frameworks are no longer supported, so the app will get harder to keep running and in the stores. We review it, keep the back end where it is sound, and move the front end to a current framework one part at a time.
