How to Optimize Costs in Amazon RDS; Part 1

Amazon RDS (Relational Database Service) is a cloud computing tool from Amazon Web Services that strives to simplify the procedure for setting up, deploying, and growing a relational database in the cloud. It offers cost-effective and scalable capacity while automating time-consuming administrative activities like hardware provisioning, database setup, patching, and backups.

When architecting and creating your cloud solutions, minimizing cloud expenditure is always a top concern. It’s important to know what you can do to minimize them. In today’s blog, we will tell you how to optimize your costs in Amazon RDS which is very necessary for the effective and efficient working of the enterprise.

Key steps for the cost optimization in AWS RDS

Tagging and tracking of the resource utilization

The initial approach toward cost-cutting is to correctly categorize your resources and begin tracking their consumption. AWS makes it simple to tag any of the RDS instances. To do so, navigate to your instance in the Amazon RDS interface. Add the tags needed to properly identify the ownership of the RDS instance to the Tags tab. Tagging Amazon RDS resources for additional information. Although you may add any tags to assist identify your Amazon RDS resources, such as application name and organization group, the following two tags are advised:

  • Application owner
  • Database owner

This information makes it simple to locate the owners and notify them of the potential for cost optimization.

For each active database instance, Amazon RDS automatically transmits metrics to Amazon CloudWatch once per minute, so you don’t need to take any action to monitor your resource usage.

Administering the regulations and instructing the proprietors

Following the policy’s definition, it’s crucial to inform the database and application owners of these cost-optimization best practices. They have to be aware of the significance of these policies and how it affects their portfolio’s cost.

Applying the policies across the company should begin after all stakeholders are on board. This may be a once-a-month manual evaluation for a small fleet of Amazon RDS databases. A daily or weekly automated procedure that examines the metrics and sends email notifications to the owners might be used by larger enterprises.
