SAS for life sciences and healthcare: trials, submissions and patient outcomes.

Pharmaceutical companies, research organizations, hospitals and health systems use SAS to bring clinical, genomic, operational and real-world data together. We set up and run the platform, build the analyses, and automate the outputs that regulators and clinicians ask for.

Why SAS here

One platform for clinical, operational and real-world data

Life sciences and healthcare work runs on data that is sensitive, regulated and spread across systems: trial databases, electronic health records, claims, lab results and patient-reported outcomes. SAS is used widely for this work because its analyses are repeatable and documented, which is what a regulator, an auditor or a clinical reviewer expects to see.

The aim of our projects is the same each time: less manual work between the data and the decision. That means submission outputs generated rather than assembled by hand, models that flag the patients at risk while there is still time to act, and evidence from real-world data that a medical affairs or market access team can stand behind.

Use cases

Where we apply SAS in life sciences and healthcare

These are the six use cases we are asked about most. Each starts from data you already hold, and each ends with a result someone can check.

What we do

  • Clinical trial optimization: recruitment, site performance, adaptive designs and protocol compliance, monitored while the trial runs
  • Patient risk prediction: readmission, sepsis, disease progression and adverse outcomes, predicted from EHR and claims data
  • Regulatory reporting: CDISC-compliant datasets and outputs for the FDA, the EMA and other agencies
  • Pharmacovigilance: safety signals found in post-market data, with natural language processing for case narratives
  • Health equity: demographic, geographic and socioeconomic data combined to show where care falls short
  • Real-world evidence: claims, clinical and patient-generated data for comparative effectiveness and value-based care

SAS products

The SAS products we work with

SAS has products built for this sector. We install and configure them, connect them to your data, and build the analyses and reports that run on them.

What we do

  • SAS Life Science Analytics Framework, for managing, analyzing and submitting clinical trial data
  • SAS Clinical Trial Data Transparency, for giving researchers controlled access to trial data
  • SAS Real World Evidence, for market access, medical affairs and epidemiology teams
  • SAS Visual Analytics, for dashboards on population health and care outcomes
  • SAS Viya, the cloud-native platform for machine learning and AI at scale

How we work

Work your quality team can follow

Work in this sector is checked twice: by your own quality team and by whoever reviews the result. So we write things down as we go. The environments we set up are recorded, the programs are kept under version control and reviewed, and each output can be traced back to the data and the code that produced it.

We usually start with your current SAS estate and one concrete deliverable, such as a submission package, a safety dashboard or a risk model, and widen the work once that deliverable is in use. The platform work behind it is described on our SAS Analytics page.

What we do

  • Environments set up and recorded
  • Programs under version control, reviewed by a second person
  • Each output traceable to its data and code
  • Hand-over documents your validation team can use

Questions

Common questions

Can SAS produce CDISC-compliant outputs for an FDA or EMA submission?

Yes. SAS is widely used to build SDTM and ADaM datasets and the tables, listings and figures that go with them. We automate those steps, so that each output is generated from the locked data and the reviewed programs rather than assembled by hand.

Do you work with hospitals and health systems as well as pharmaceutical companies?

Yes. For providers the work is mostly patient risk models, readmission and sepsis prediction, and dashboards on population health and care outcomes, built from EHR and claims data.

Can we use real-world data alongside our trial data?

Yes. SAS can combine claims, EHR, registry and patient-reported data with trial data, so that medical affairs, market access and epidemiology teams work from one governed source.

How do we start?

Use the form on this page to tell us about your SAS environment and the work in front of you. Someone who works on SAS projects will reply. If you would rather talk it through first, book a call.
