A city's Oracle database moved off ageing Solaris hardware

A major California city ran a mission-critical Oracle database on Solaris servers nearing end of life. We mapped the dependencies, confirmed the applications would work unchanged and re-platformed the database to Linux without disrupting public services.

Modernizing Legacy Infrastructure for Scalability and Cloud Readiness

A major city in California was operating a mission-critical database environment on legacy Solaris infrastructure that had become increasingly expensive to maintain and difficult to scale. As hardware reached end-of-life and long-term support options diminished, the city needed a modernization strategy that would minimize operational risk while preparing its IT environment for future cloud adoption.

Princeton IT Services partnered with the client to successfully re-platform their Oracle database environment from Solaris to Linux with minimal application changes and no disruption to critical public services. By carefully assessing dependencies, validating application compatibility, and executing a structured migration plan, our team ensured a seamless transition while preserving existing business processes.

The migration delivered significant operational benefits, including improved system performance, greater scalability, reduced infrastructure costs, and access to the broader Linux ecosystem. Most importantly, the new platform established a strong foundation for future cloud migration initiatives, enabling the client to embrace modernization without the risks and costs associated with a complete application rewrite.

This case study highlights how Princeton IT Services helped transform a legacy Solaris environment into a modern, cloud-ready Linux platform through meticulous planning, technical expertise, and a low-risk migration approach.
