Understanding Data Quality Dimensions and Creating Custom Ones

Learn how Data Quality Dimensions in Ataccama ONE improve data governance, data validation, accuracy, completeness, and overall data quality management.

· · 3 min read

Data quality is the foundation of effective data management and a successful data governance framework. Organizations rely on accurate, complete, and consistent data to make informed business decisions, improve operational efficiency, and maintain compliance. One powerful way Ataccama ONE supports enterprise data quality is through Data Quality Dimensions—structured categories that help measure and monitor different aspects of data quality.

Whether you are using predefined dimensions or creating custom ones, understanding how these dimensions work is essential for building a strong data quality framework and improving long-term business performance.

What Are Data Quality Dimensions?

Data Quality Dimensions are logical categories used to evaluate specific aspects of data quality. When creating data quality rules, every rule must be assigned to a dimension. This helps organizations organize, track, and report on their data quality metrics more effectively.

Ataccama ONE includes five default dimensions designed to support comprehensive data quality management:

  • Validity – Ensures data is usable based on format, structure, content, and attribute relationships
  • Uniqueness – Detects and prevents duplicate records across datasets
  • Completeness – Verifies that all mandatory fields contain data
  • Accuracy – Confirms values match trusted reference data for improved data accuracy
  • Timeliness – Measures whether data is available and updated when required

These dimensions provide a reliable framework for data validation, data profiling, and ongoing data quality monitoring. Each dimension contains predefined outcomes such as “Valid” or “Invalid,” making it easier to assess overall data health and generate clear data quality reporting.

Overall Quality in Data Quality Management

One of the key advantages of using Data Quality Dimensions is the ability to calculate an Overall Quality score. Organizations can decide which dimensions contribute to this score based on their business priorities and compliance requirements.

If a dimension does not contribute to overall quality, its results will not impact the final quality percentage. This flexibility allows businesses to customize their data quality assessment strategy and focus on the dimensions most critical to operations.

It is important to remember that the Overall Quality score can never exceed the lowest contributing dimension because records must successfully pass all applicable data quality rules to be considered high-quality data.

How to Create Custom Data Quality Dimensions

Creating custom dimensions in Ataccama ONE helps organizations build a more tailored data quality solution that aligns with industry-specific requirements and business goals.

Steps to Create Custom Dimensions

  • Navigate to:

Data Quality > Rules > DQ Dimensions > DQ Dimensions Settings

  • Click Create and configure the following:
  • Name – A unique identifier for the custom dimension
  • Order – Controls where the dimension appears in the list
  • Active – Enables or disables selection during rule creation
  • Overall Contribution – Determines whether it affects the Overall Quality score
  • Color & Abbreviation – Helps improve visibility in dashboards and reports
  • Define the dimension outcomes by setting which results pass or fail quality checks.
  • Add the custom dimension to the navigation menu for quick access.
  • Publish the changes to make the dimension available across your data governance environment.

Custom dimensions allow organizations to expand beyond standard data quality metrics and address unique operational or compliance needs.

Best Practices for Data Quality Frameworks

To build an effective data quality framework, organizations should follow a few important best practices:

  • Use unique names for every custom dimension
  • Deactivate unused dimensions instead of deleting them
  • Ensure at least one dimension contributes to Overall Quality
  • Regularly review data quality KPIs and reporting metrics
  • Align dimensions with broader master data management and governance initiatives

Following these practices improves data consistency, enhances reporting accuracy, and supports long-term data quality improvement efforts.

Final Thoughts

Implementing the right Data Quality Dimensions is essential for maintaining reliable business data and supporting a scalable data governance framework. By combining predefined and custom dimensions, organizations can strengthen data validation, improve data accuracy, and create a more effective enterprise data quality strategy.

With Ataccama ONE, businesses gain the flexibility to customize their data quality management approach, improve operational insights, and maintain high-quality data across every system and process.
