Building Telemetry for a Claude AI Agent

Learn how to build AI agent telemetry for Claude with a complete guide to AI observability, LLM monitoring, logging, and performance tracking in production systems.

· · 2 min read

When deploying an AI agent in production, knowing that it works is not enough — you need to know how it works, how often it fails, and what it costs. That is where AI agent telemetry and AI observability come in.

Why Telemetry Matters

Claude agents are not simple request-response systems. They run in agentic loops, call multiple tools, consume tokens across several API calls, and may serve dozens of users simultaneously.

Without proper AI logging and monitoring, a slow turn, a failing tool, or a runaway loop is invisible until a user complains.

This is why monitoring AI agents and implementing LLM telemetry is essential for maintaining performance and reliability in production environments.

What to Track

Good telemetry for a Claude agent covers four layers:

Agent identity
When multiple agent instances run in parallel, you need to know which agent handled which request. Registering each instance with a unique ID and a heartbeat timestamp lets you see exactly how many agents are live at any given moment.

This forms the foundation of AI system monitoring and helps track LLM performance across distributed environments.

Sessions
Group every turn a user has in one conversation into a single session. This lets you measure engagement, spot abandoned conversations, and calculate the true cost per user interaction.

Session-level data is critical for AI observability and understanding real-world usage patterns.

Turns
Each user prompt and agent response is one turn. Track the full text, token counts, response latency, number of agentic loop iterations, and whether the turn succeeded or hit the iteration limit.

This level of detail supports AI agent debugging and improves overall response quality over time.

Tool calls
Every tool the agent invokes should be logged individually with its input, output preview, and execution time.

This is where telemetry for AI systems becomes most actionable — you can instantly identify slow tools, frequent failures, and usage patterns across your stack. It also strengthens AI logging and monitoring by providing granular visibility into operations.

Separation of Concerns

A key architectural decision is keeping telemetry in a separate database from your knowledge base.

Your knowledge base holds business-critical content — regulation text, versions, and change history. Your telemetry database holds operational data such as logs, traces, and performance metrics.

This separation is a best practice in AI observability architecture, ensuring clean data management, easier scaling, and better access control.

The Result

With this in place, every user prompt, agent response, tool execution, token count, and error is recorded automatically — giving your team a complete operational picture without changing how the agent behaves.

This approach enables effective monitoring of AI agents, improves reliability, and lays the groundwork for scalable LLM observability tools in production.
